Delta dedicates new Boeing 737-900ER as 'Spirit of Seattle'

Dec 5, 2013

ATLANTA, Dec. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- In celebration of its 80th anniversary of service and growing presence in Seattle, Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) today unveiled at Boeing Field a new Boeing 737-900ER aircraft as the 'Spirit of Seattle,' dedicated to the city of Seattle and the airline's customers, employees and partners in the region.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20090202/DELTALOGO)

The dedication took place in a ceremony at Boeing Field, the same location that Delta began service in Seattle on Dec. 3, 1933, through Northwest Airways, which eventually became Northwest Airlines. The inaugural flight was flown from Spokane to Seattle and back to Spokane on a Waco JTO biplane carrying no passengers. Initial passenger service was a Tacoma-Seattle-Wenatchee-Spokane route using 7-passenger, 120-mph Hamilton H47 Metalplanes.

Today, Delta operates 35 peak-day departures to 15 destinations from its growing gateway in Seattle, including non-stop international service to Amsterdam, Paris, Tokyo-Narita, Tokyo-Haneda, Shanghai and Beijing. Additional international service is planned in 2014 to London-Heathrow as well as Hong Kong and Seoul, pending government approval. Delta will also expand Seattle service to Anchorage, Alaska; Las Vegas; Los Angeles; Portland, Ore.; San Diego; and San Francisco and also recently announced new service to Fairbanks, Alaska, and Vancouver, Canada, beginning in the summer of 2014.

"For 80 years, our customers, employees and partners in Seattle have embraced Delta, and our growth here would not be possible without them," said Mike Medeiros, Delta's vice president – Seattle. "The Spirit of Seattle aircraft will proudly bear its name as it travels around the country as a representation of Delta's history in Seattle and a sign of our thanks and commitment to our future here."

More than 100 Delta Chairman's Club honorees attended the dedication event along with local employees and corporate and community partners. The honorees are accompanying the aircraft on its delivery flight from Seattle to Atlanta prior to entering service later this month. Chairman's Club is Delta's highest honor in employee recognition, and honorees embody Delta's values through their distinguished contributions and exceptional service to customers and the communities Delta serves.

The 'Spirit of Seattle' is the ninth of 100 new 737-900ERs that will be delivered to Delta between 2013 and 2018 as it retires older mainline jets and upgrades its fleet. The 737-900ER will be deployed on several routes to and from Seattle, among others, and has a range of 3,200 nautical miles, giving it the ability to operate any domestic route in Delta's extensive network.

Delta will take delivery of three additional 737-900ERs this year for a total of 12 aircraft in 2013, 19 aircraft per year in 2014 through 2017, and 12 aircraft in 2018. The 180-seat aircraft will replace older, less efficient aircraft on a capacity-neutral basis while providing customers with an industry-leading on-board experience.

As Delta's first aircraft to feature Boeing's new "Sky Interior," the 737-900ER offers the airline's customers expanded carry-on baggage space, a roomier, more airy cabin and an LED lighting system that provides different color schemes, such as a soft blue sky and a relaxing pallet of sunset colors.

Every Seattle flight offers BusinessElite/First Class and Economy Comfort seating as well as domestic Wi-Fi service. Delta has also invested $14 million in its facilities at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, including its recently completed lobby renovations, new Delta Sky Club, Sky Priority services, new gate area power recharging stations and expanded ticket counters.

What Impact a Good College and Faculty Have on Your Studies

Students start questioning themselves regarding the importance of the college from their high school life, which way to go and what subject to choose, becomes their primary concern and top priority. The role of the college and faculty in a student’s life is inevitable as college is the place which opens doors of new opportunities and prepares you to enter the competitive world of today. Obviously when you are in college, you compete with your fellow students and develop the capabilities to succeed in upcoming ventures and endeavors.
The role of teachers and faculty is perceived by students like a helping hand. Whenever students need help with their projects, assignments and other things like everyday class matters and problems, the faculty is there to help them out. The future success of a student is impartially dependent on teachers and faculty as they are the makers and architects of their minds.
As time and technology both have changed and have put the gadgets in our pockets in forms of Smart phones, tablets and laptops, the typical student-college and student-faculty relationship has transformed into an online college and online tutor engagement. If you are wondering that how this gets done then let me tell you that with the help of online college and online education, you study right from your home without disturbing your daily routines and existing work schedules.
Online college gives you the freedom to study at your own pace without following any strict deadlines and if you are that kind of person who does not like the traditional classroom environment or likes to study at his/her own pace without matching the pace of the whole class then you can enroll in online colleges with the benefit that they are much cheaper than the regular study colleges and if you compare their costs, you’ll see a huge difference by yourself.
In case of online learning, the importance of faculty comes in the terms of online tutors with whom students can discuss their course material and ask them questions about the problems in their coursework. Online tutors, on the other hand, play an important part by helping students to cope up with their studies. The online colleges arrange the tutors for students and give students a platform for communication and discussion.
Now the important thing is the selection of such an online college which gives you good tutors as well as good support whenever needed because the more good the college and tutors will be, the more it will have a positive impact on your studies.
·       Go for accredited courses: First and foremost, look for the accredited courses. There are both accredited and non accredited courses available but non accredited courses don’t hold significant importance that an accredited course from a good online college holds.
·       Level of tutor support: The next important thing to look for is the level of tutor support the college is offering and that can be determined from the feedback of previous students. Search the web thoroughly; you’ll get a no. of reviews which will help you in decision making.
·       Quality of course material: Last important thing is to check whether the college is providing good and relevant course material or not because that is an important part of your curriculum and your communication with the tutor.

How Students Can Benefit From Using Social Media

students social mediaNo man or woman is an island…

…but when you’re a student, life can feel quite isolated, given all those hours spent studying in the dusty library, attending tiresome lectures and grappling with the mind-boggling jargon of some of those blasted text books. As you stare wistfully out of the window, you observe the rest of the world socialising and feel a pang of jealousy for their carefree existence.

Stop being wistful and harness the power of social media for work and play, and you will reap the benefits in no time, my friend.

The first step is to edit the Facebook account you obviously have already (if you don’t, which rock have you been living under all this time?). Subscribe only to the news feed of friends who actually have anything interesting to say, or post brilliant LOLcats; the rest are just a waste of your precious time that could be better spent studying.

Go through that huge backlog of friend requests you’re bound to have and add all your fellow students; search them out yourself if for some inconceivable reason they haven’t requested an add. In the absence of human interaction, a sympathetic response to your desperate ‘this law essay on constitutional law is literally killing me’ wall post at 3am will boost your morale far greater than your annoying teenage cousin ‘liking’ your cry for help.

Put your fear of nerdism aside and use Facebook to set up a study group; We Hate Early Morning Lectures, for example, will be inundated with members before you can say ‘this textbook cost me a week’s worth of food’. Grappling with the finer points of your essay question will be made easier if you can ask a fellow student for their input, not to mention that warm, fuzzy feeling you get when sharing your wisdom amongst grateful recipients. You could even go so far as to suggest a meet-up in real life! Just imagine: pooling all that superior knowledge in one place, that just so happens to be the pub.

Moving on, think carefully about how you use your Twitter account (you do have one, right?). It is another awesome way of keeping in touch with your fellow students, your professors and your university. Fill your newsfeed with academic input by subscribing to the Twitter accounts of your favourite (ahem) journals, who will often post links to useful articles or publicise talks that could truly enhance your academic knowledge. Seek out journalists who specialise in your chosen subject and add them to your feed for a fresh perspective relating to your area of study.

Consider starting a blog to record your progress as a student, though don’t make the mistake of prioritising it over that essay with a deadline looming large, tempting as that might be. Inject the content with some humour whilst keeping focussed on the subject at hand; the natural talent that led you to become a student will enable you to balance intellect with in-jokes. Your blog could be read by fellow students, your professors or even potential employers.

I’m going to end with a warning, though: your social media profile ought to be managed to minimise damage to your reputation. Those ‘hilarious’ photos from your fancy dress pub crawl might be a source of mirth to you and your mates, but might not amuse the recruiter from that big company in the City. Employers can and will use Facebook, Twitter, blogs and other social media to vet potential employees, so delete all incriminating photos, remove yourself from dubious groups and think twice before sharing that off-colour joke.

Expanding Your Mind – Learning For Success

expand mind learningWhen learning, it’s important to broaden your horizons as much as possible; this means reading widely, and learning more about subjects that you might not normally be interested in. It also means making use of the many free and inexpensive resources available to you on and offline, as well as changing how you learn; doing so can help you towards a higher degree of employability, and can also set you up for lifelong learning.

Reading More

Just taking the time to read more every day can make a big difference to your education; try to read the newspaper online, and cover multiple papers to get a different point of view. It’s also possible to broaden your horizons by reading a wide range of different genres, which can be particularly useful if you’re into the habit of reading the same authors. While it’s not a good idea to force yourself to read things you don’t want to, it’s worth sampling as much as you can.

Challenging Yourself

One of the best ways to challenge yourself academically is to focus on one area that you think you’d like to know more about – if, say, you want to improve your knowledge of the Second World War, you can focus on watching documentaries online, and reading more widely than you have before. Similarly, if you have difficulties with some subjects, you may want to try a different approach.

Make Use of Resources

There are plenty of different resources available to learners; online courses are provided by the Open University for free, while you can download and watch or listen to lectures from iTunes University. Schemes like the Open University’s OpenLearn project also makes it possible to complete free courses online, which can lead to future qualifications.

Change How You Learn

It’s also important to try to change how you learn by experimenting with different methods; while remembering basic study approaches, you can improve your knowledge and skills by trying to write a diary about what you’re studying, or by joining an online discussion forum. Reading around a subject, for example, different authors before an English A-level exam, is particularly important for showing initiative, and can give you a significant advantage in the future job market.

You can also start to change how you learn by trying memorisation techniques, and by researching writing skills. Getting better at being self aware about what you’re doing is a useful first step to trying to figure out where you may be having problems with some subjects; this means looking more widely at techniques that may not have been provided to you in school.

Outcomes

Broadening your horizons ultimately means being able to develop improved critical thinking skills, while also making you more confident in tackling subjects that you may not be familiar with. In the same way, learning about a wider range of topics should hopefully feed back into your main studies, and can enable you to stand out for employers – even if you can just bring up your wider interests in an interview, this can make you appear more distinctive.

10 interesting facts you didn’t know about the Internet

internetToday everyone uses Internet as a means of communication, studying and entertainment but still there are plenty of amazing facts about the Internet we couldn’t imagine! Here are some of them:

1. The well-known social networking website Facebook (founded by Mark Zuckerberg) now has more than 520 million registered users. If Facebook was a country, it would have taken the third place among the world’s largest countries. Indeed, do you know anybody who does not have an account on Facebook? :)

2. Today’s news website contains as much information as a person of the 18th century could learn. According to Martin Gilbert, researcher of the University of Southern California, 100 years ago a person could master no more than 50 books in a lifetime. Today, the average person is able to absorb the information stored in 600 000 books (!)

3. The highest spread of Internet connection is in… Bermuda. By comparison, Japan takes the 22th place.

4. Within a month the Google search engine can handle 35 billion queries. Today, users search almost everything on the net: where to buy a TV, how to find a plumber – 10 years ago it was hard to imagine where a person was looking for answers to these questions. :)

5. All Internet is 4 exabytes of information. By the way, 1 exabyte = 1000 petabytes; 1 petabyte = 1000 terabytes; 1 terrabyte = 1000 gigabytes. Each year, this amount is doubled.

6. Today, every 8th couple has met through the Internet.

7. The first smiley appeared in 1979, when Kevin McKenzie tried to express his emotions by electronic means. First it look like this -) Three years later, Scott Fahlman added a colon : -) and it took the form we are used to.

8. With the advent of the Internet, the virtual piracy appeared. Today, the 1th place among the countries with the highest software piracy rates takes Armenia.

9. 81% of emails is spam.

LanguageTool

This is a rule-based language checker that will find errors for which a rule is defined in its XML configuration files. Rules for more complicated errors can be written in Java.

You can think of LanguageTool as a tool to detect errors that a simple spell checker cannot detect, e.g. mixing up there/their, no/now etc. It can also detect a limited amount of grammar mistakes. It does not include spell checking.

Distance Learning today

distance learningToday distance learning via the Internet is becoming more attractive for many people and even organizations. There are several reasons:

1. You can take lessons at any convenient time/location
2. You have a wide range of training programs to choose
3. Online courses are frequently updated and contain contemporary knowledge
4. Teaching methods are being improved constantly
5. There is no need to spend time on the road to a tuition center/ educational institution
6. You can study with minimal financial expenses

Distance learning opens the door to the most prestigious educational institutions regardless of what country you live in. Even the financial issues lose their significance since the distance learning courses are 40% cheaper than the classroom ones.

There are two main types of distance learning: synchronous and asynchronous learning. In the first case lessons take place on-line that in essence is similar to ordinary classroom lessons. The asynchronous learning presents an archive of lectures or other materials that may be accessed by students at any time.
The next point is the so-called event control module which is responsible for lessons planning. In other words, the distance learning system provides a virtual creating of learning stages. For example, a student has to read a certain document, watch a video, listen to a lecture, then take a test and after passing it he may continue to the next piece of material. In fact it’s similar to the classic education system when students have several attempts to take a test/exam until they pass it. But in the case of the distance learning there is a great advantage: all the detailed statistics are available at any time that provides major opportunities for objective analysis.

However, due to the individual particularities of information perception distance learning is not suitable for everyone. First of all, you need to have good reading comprehension skills. Some on-line courses provide audio and video materials but the majority of information is available through written text. Then, you should be able to resist constant distractions and motivate yourself since the distance courses are free from the constant supervision of a teacher. And finally, you have to set your own goals and be able to work on your own, completing your tasks in time.

So, the distance education is not suitable for all the types of learners and subjects, but due to its advantages and the increasingly developing technologies in near future it may be implemented into educational institutions of all levels.

Possible to upload knowledge into the brain!

cyber brainRecent advances in science and technology can be used to obtain the martial arts skills, learn to drive an aircraft or to speak a foreign language, without leaving home.

Researchers from the Boston University and the Computational Neuroscience Laboratories «ATR» (Kyoto, Japan) affirm that the mechanism of “uploading” knowledge in the human brain can be created in the near future. This technology will allow a person to acquire the necessary knowledge without years of training. Forming a visual image is a complex process. In different parts of the brain multiple points, lines, and colors are formed in their movement, then they all come together, and a person gets the opportunity to see an object the way it is.

In their experiments, scientists managed to improve visual perception of the brain areas responsible for this process with the help of the Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) which allow to activate the necessary parts of the brain.

Experiments with volunteers showed that after this “training” their visual perception had improved, even if they didn’t know what exactly they were taught.

The point is that scientists have discovered that the brain areas responsible for the higher stage of visual perception are so plastic, that it’s sufficient to specify the desired pattern of activity in order to “upload” the necessary knowledge into the brain.

According to scientists, after creating such a technology it will be possible to enable the chosen program before going to sleep, and wake up in the morning with the necessary skills.

The future of e-learning

e-learningThe distance learning has a goal to make a learner obtain all the necessary knowledge and skills completely independently, without participation of other people. It is still not possible, but we should admit that over the past several years the distance learning (e-learning) has covered a large number of learners all over the world.

The Internet has become a huge technological breakthrough, more important than radio and television. Since it got possible to exchange instant messages with any person who has Internet access, the global network found its use in the field of education. Distribution of the “fast internet” has made it possible to launch “online” seminars (Webinars) for training and to give private lessons via Skype and other similar instant messaging applications.

However, there are some disappointing facts in the distance learning system. The expenses of companies from 2004 to 2006 for the purchase of e-learning courses have fallen sharply. It has to do with low efficiency of distance learning for a variety of parameters, such as lack of motivation, ineffectiveness of verbal skills development etc.

Distance learning has already begun integrating with real time learning.
In the future they will balance with each other. Most likely, e-learning will be used for theoretical material, and a teacher will provide the “problem” aspects of learning, which are more effective in thinking skills development than taking lecture notes. Also real time lessons will be devoted to practical skills development.

A variety of motion and pressure sensors makes it possible to develop a set of motor skills. Sensors for programming may become available within two to three years that in continuation will lead to the creation of a whole virtual reality. For example, already existing flight simulators create realistic conditions, in which you can work out real piloting skills.

The development of medical technology will also create a new training system. In particular, sensors that make it possible for disabled people to move their prosthetic arm/leg, controlled by their thoughts, will provide a basis for student’s movements supervision. For example, with the help of a computer it will be possible to teach beginning pianists to hold hands in right position. In general, a possibility to control a muscle contraction by a weak electric signal could be used to work out the movement accuracy.

The history of e-learning is directly related to the development of technology and communication systems. Distance learning will become an integral part of our lives, since gives us an opportunity to learn faster and more efficiently. However, traditional education is not going away, but will be complemented by excellent opportunities of e-learning.
